Pope Francis has confirmed that he will be visiting Sri Lanka next January. During an inflight news conference aboard the papal flight on his return from Jerusalem to Rome, the Pontiff announced that he planned to visit Sri Lanka in January. Archbishop of Colombo Rt. Rev. Early this year Pope Francis accepted an invitation from Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith to undertake a visit to Sri Lanka. Also President Rajapaksa last August wrote to Pope Francis extending an invitation to visit Sri Lanka. Accordingly, the Pontiff announced yesterday that he expects to visit Sri Lanka and the Philippines next January. Pope Paul VI visited Sri Lanka in 1970, and Pope John Paul II visited the island in 1995 to preside over the religious rites in the Beatification of Sri Lankan missionary Fr. Joseph Vaz.
