a systematic programme to purchase the big onion produce from the local cultivators.
President Rajapaksa gave these instructions to Minister Johnston Fernando while joining in an inspection of the Mahasenpura big onion farmland in Tissamaharama. The Mahasenpura big onion farmland in Tissamaharama is one such project. It is planned to bring 2000 hectares under the cultivation of big onions by next year. The yield expected is 50 thousand metric tons. This would be sufficient to meet the local requirements for three months.
The President who examined the activities of the farmland exchanged pleasantries with the cultivators. The President emphasized to the farmers the importance of using organic fertilizer instead of chemical fertilizer. Cultivators from the North and East had come to this farmland to purchase their seed requirements. They purchased their requirements in the presence of the President.
