Sil and meditation campaigns in schools marking Wesak

Students of all schools observe Sil in parallel to the Wesak Week.


More than two million school children throughout the island observed sil and engaged in meditation programmes in view of the Wesak Week. These programmes were held under the guidance of the Education Ministry. Accordingly Sil campaigns were organized in all National and Provincial Schools including those in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. The programmes were held from 7.30 am to 1.30 pm.


Various religious programmes were also organized in certain school even during the afternoon. President Rajapaksa visited several Colombo schools this morning and met the children who were observing Sil.


The President first visited Nalanda College in Colombo. By that time the students were engaged in Sakman Bavana in the school grounds. The President visited them as remained there for a brief occasion.


The President who visited St. Paul’s Balika Vidyalaya in Colmbo met the girls who were observing Sil. The school staff as well as the parents exchanged pleasantries with the President.


Thereafter the President visited Ananda College Colombo. By then the students were listening to the Dhamma sermon. The President remained there for some time. Non Buddhists pursuing studies in the College were seen assisting the students who were observing Sil. The aim of this effort was to direct the children from their childhood to religious activities to build religious harmony. The President was joined by Minister Bandula Gunawardena.


Programmes to observe sill were launched in all schools throughout the island on the instructions of the Education Ministry. The observation of Sil took place in parallel to the series of events organized by the Educating Ministry to mark the Wesak Week.


Special religious programmes were organized at the Carlton Pre-School in Maradana in view of Wesak Full Moon Poya day under the patronage of First Lady Shiranthi Wickremasinghe Rajapaksa. The Ven. Lihiniyawe Dhammaratana Thera of the Hunupitiya Gangarama Temple, delivered a Dhamma Sermon on behalf of these children.


The First Lady pointed out the need to direct these children to religion from their childhood in order to grooms a virtuous generation filled with moral values.
