Buddhists the world over commemorate Wesak tomorrow. The State Wesak Festival will be held centering the Polonnaruwa Sacred Area. 30 thousand policemen have been deployed to provide security during the Wesak season.
Wesak Full Moon Poya Day which commemorates the birth, enlightenment and passing away of the Buddha falls tomorrow. The entire country is geared to commemorate the event on a religious note. Special religious observances are being organized in all Vihares. Pandals and Wesak Lanterns will be adding colour to the Wesak Festival.
This year’s State Wesak Festival will be held in Polonnaruwa. All arrangements are being finalized to hold the State Wesak Festival at the historic Watadageya premises in Medirigiriya. Many public and private institutions have joined in the conduct of Dansalas and religious ceremonies. The public are putting up Buddhist flags, Wesak lanterns and many other creations on either side of the roadways. The Gal Vihare Sacred Area is prepared to accommodate over 5000 devotees from the early hours of tomorrow, providing them with all the facilities they need to observe Sil.
In the meantime, all Wine Stores, meat outlets, race bookies and Casinos will be kept closed tomorrow and the day after. This regulation will also apply to Supermarkets. The Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs has instructed all Provincial Secretaries and District Secretaries to take necessary action in this respect.
The Police too will be adopting security measures for the safety of the people during the Wesak season. The Police emphasized that they would leave no room for any task that would denigrate Buddhism. Accordingly a large stock of Buddhist flags which had different colours has been seized from several parts of the country.
