The new military hospital will be opened tomorrow

The new military hospital will be declared open by the president tomorrow. This new hospital with state of the art facilities can accommodate 1024 in house patients and treat 1000 outdoor patients at any given time.The Army medical corps which commenced with 8 medical students in 1881 under the volunteer infantry regiment, became regular regiment in 1949. Since its inception, it has rendered a yeoman service to look after the health of soldiers. Many programs were implemented to look after the soldiers who made numerous sacrifices to achieve peace in the country where there is leader to look after them and people who are ever grateful to the soldiers. Although there was a separate hospital for soldiers, there were difficulties in providing services as it was scattered over several locations. Defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has been able to make the thoughts of Commander in Chief, President Mahinda Rajapaksa in to reality, by providing a solution to those difficulties. The new 10 storied hospital built at Narahenpita has cost 6500 million rupees.

Army Health Services Director Major General Sanjeewa Munasinghe said that Officers, other ranks and their families could seek treatment from the hospital. Apart from them retired Army personnel can get in house treatment. The hospital also has a VVIP and a VIP section.This hospital is equipped with all modern facilities including an Accident Service. It has a Radiology unit with ECG, X-Ray, Echo, Mammography and Ultra sound, an in house patient department, Physiotherapy department, ENT unit and modern laboratories. It is also equipped with 2 special operating theaters, maternal clinics and pediatric wards. This state of the art, modern hospital has been built by the Army Engineering regiment.
