The President of the United Nations General Assembly who joined in the inauguration of the World Conference on Youth meets the President. Sri Lanka’s progress has come in for praise by the United Nations.
President of the United Nations General Assembly Dr. John W. Ashe who arrived in the island to participate in the 15th World Conference on Youth met President Rajapaksa at Temple Trees. John Ashe praised the massive development that is taking place within the country. He also praised the address made by the President at the inauguration of the World Conference on Youth.
Elaborating on the development that is taking place in the country after the conflict period, President Rajapaksa pointed out to him that many economic benefits achieved by Sri Lanka. The President told the UN General Assembly President that Sri Lanka has reached the highest growth in Asia immediately after China. The Government has rehabilitated more than 12 thousand LTTE cadres. He further elaborated to John Ashe that it is from the Jaffna District that the highest number of students have qualified to pursue higher studies at present.
Noting that women participation in many spheres including Education, Health and Bank remained at 60 percent or at a higher level, the President said that this situation was not prevalent only in politics.
Deputy Minister Chandima Weerakkody, President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunge, Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representatives to the United Nations Dr. Palitha Kohone and Foreign Secretary Kshenuka Seneviratne were among those present at this meeting.
