Environment should be safeguarded not through regulations but examples and awareness – President

The President has said that the environment should be safeguarded not through regulations but with awareness and examples. The President made this reference lauding environment friendly projects and those who launched them.


President Rajapaksa was speaking at a ceremony held at the BMICH to present 2014 National Green Awards with the aim of encouraging and acclaiming environment friendly industries and services. This is an annual event organized by the Central Environment Authority for the third occasion based on the National Environment Policy enunciated in the Mahinda Chinthana Future Vision.


Awards were presented under three categories Gold, Silver and Bronze representing many spheres including establishments, enterprises and industries which had made a vital contribution to environment friendly activities.


Further expressing his views at the Awards ceremony, President Rajapaksa pointed out that the intention of the Government was to achieve the development goals while safeguarding the environment. He underscored that the Government had succeeded in minimizing the harm done to the environment although many development projects have so far been launched.


The Government took frequent action to give an ear to the voices raised by the people with respect to environmental issues. The President announced that special attention was direct to the environment topic in all budgets. The President emphasized that it was due to the tangible environment policies adhered to by the Government that it was possible to protect the Forest Reserves including the Sinharaja which had been auctioned and also bring the beauty in the village to Colombo.


Ministers Susil Premajayantha and Secretary to the Ministry of Environment D.M.U.D. Basnayake were among those who were present at this Awards ceremony.
