Civilian life and the country’s economy was severely impacted due to terrorist activities. But the Commander in Chief and the heroic soldiers succeeded in obliterating the terrorist outfit. If not, no one could estimate the damage caused to the country and the number of lives lost due to this scourge.
The tiger terrorists took away the lives of two war heroes in an attack mooted in the Mullaitivu area on 13th June 1990. And on the same day the terrorists unleashed a series of attacks in the Oddusudan and Trincomalee areas. As a result 16 war heroes made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the country.
On 13th June 1995, the ruthless terrorists carried out an attack in the Kalawanchikudi area killing two war heroes. In the year 1997, also on a day like today the terrorists lying in ambush mooted several attacks on the heroic soldiers depriving the country of the valuable services of nine war heroes.
The next target of the terrorists was Muhamalai. The terrorists launched a heinous attack on 13th June 1998. As a result 17 war heroes made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the unity of the motherland. On 13th June in the year 2000, the tiger terrorists launched an attack targeting a group of war heroes on foot patrol taking away the lives of four war heroes.
The tiger pistol gang killed two innocent civilians in the Chundikulam area on 13th June 2008. On the same day, the terrorists unleashed an attack in the Janakapura area killing three war heroes.
Terrorism which plagued the country in this manner for 30 years was brought to an end on 18th May 2009 from the Nanthikadal Lagoon. By then the terrorists had taken away a total of 83 lives which included three innocent civilians. The balance 80 was those who sacrificed their lives on behalf of the country.
Following the decisions taken by the unflinching and fearless leader President Rajapaksa as the Commander in Chief and under the guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the heroic soldiers succeeded in advancing in the humanitarian operations. As a result, a free and peaceful country was bequeathed to the nation by liberating the motherland from the grip of the terrorists.
All communities are living happily within that peaceful country. Local as well as extraneous forces are determined to devastate that freedom enjoyed by the nation. However, the patriotic fraternity does not permit to hinder the freedom of the motherland to meet the needs of the Tamil Diaspora or groups loyal to the terrorists. The patriotic citizens had proved this not only by word but over and over again through their deeds.
These dark memories are being refreshed in these episodes that the nation may act responsibly in a manner that ensures such destruction would not recur. Action has been taken to display the photographs of the war heroes who made supreme sacrifices in the battle to rout terrorism and discharge a noble service as an honour to the sacrifices they have made.
