The aim of the tiger terrorists was to cause carnage
and destruction to public property. The damage unleashed by them for thirty years is inestimable.
It was the Commander in Chief and the members of the Security Forces that succeeded in drawing to an end such a bleak period obliterating the terrorists from the country. If not the country would have still been plagued by this menace.
The tiger terrorists who killed three war heroes in the Chenkaladi area on 18th June 1987, unveiled their killing spree on this day throughout the dark era with the intention of taking away more lives. On 18th June, the tiger terrorists mooted another attack in Vavuniya with the aim of quenching their thirst for blood. Four war heroes sacrificed their lives on behalf of the country as a result of this attack.
On 18th June 1995, the terrorists targeted an attack on a group of war heroes according security to the Maligatenna village. Eight war heroes lost their lives following this assault. The next target of the terrorists was the Meegasgodella village. The terrorists slaughtered six innocent civilians during this attack on 18th June 1996 shocking the entire country.
The tiger terrorists unleashed several attacks aiming at the war heroes in the Thenpitiya and Pulmuddai areas on 18th June 1997. 26 war heroes made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the unity of the motherland in these assaults. Ten more heroic soldiers were killed in two attacks unleashed by the tiger terrorists in the Mankulam and Pulaweli areas on 18th June 1998.
Again in the year 2007 also on a day like today, the terrorists lying in ambush launched an attack taking away the lives of ten war heroes. Two more war heroes sacrificed their lives on behalf of the motherland in an attack mooted on 18th June 2008.
Terrorism which was a bane for the country for 30 years was routed on 18th May 2009 from the Nanthikadal Lagoon. By then the number of lives taken away by these cruel terrorists on 18th June each year throughout the dark era was 71. This included six innocent civilians. The other 65 were valiant soldiers who dedicated their lives for the sake of the freedom of the nation.
President Rajapaksa, as the Commander in Chief fulfilled his responsibility of ending the war taking direct and fearless decisions. He did so without succumbing to local or foreign pressures. These decisions were transformed into actions under the prudent guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. As a result of the enormous dedications, the heroic soldiers succeeded in liberating their motherland from the terrorists as they were properly guided by a prudent leadership.
As a result all communities are now living in the country in peace and happiness. Although certain forces are determined to devastate this peaceful environment, the patriotic citizens are not prepared to leave any room for such forces to raise their heads. They have proved this not only by words but even through deeds.
The citizens who love the country never hesitate to teach a fitting lesson to such forces. The photographs of war heroes who made supreme sacrifices to enthrone peace in the motherland are being displayed to the entire world not only in honour of such heroes but also to show respect to their family members.
