President begins his official tour of the Maldives

President Rajapaksa begins an official tour of the Maldives.


The President was accorded a very warm welcome on his arrival in the Maldives.

President Rajapaksa left the island this afternoon on a four day official tour of the Maldives and Seychelles. The President and First Lady Shiranthi Wickremasinghe Rajapaksa reached the Ibrahim Naseer International Airport this afternoon.

The President and the First Lady were warmly greeted at the Airport by the Maldivian President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom and First Lady Fathima Ibrahim. There was a 21 gun salute accorded on behalf of the President by the National Deence Force of the Maldives. It was followed by a military parade after the rendering of the National Anthems of the two countries. There was a colourful event presented by school children of the Maldives.

Thereafter the President and his delegation were conducted to the President’s Office in Male in a cultural procession.

President Rajapaksa during his official stay in the Maldives will have bilateral discussions with his Maldivian counterpart. It will be followed by official talks between the two leaders. Several agreements with respect to health and investments are due to be inked. Former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is also slated to meet President Rajapaksa.

The Maldivian President will hold a banquet in honour of President Rajapaksa and the First Lady. After the visit to the Maldives, President Rajapaksa will leave for Seychelles on an official tour.

Ministers Prof. G.L. Peiris and S.B. Dissanayake, Parliamentarians Sajin Vass Gunawardena, A.H.M. Aswer and Uditha Lokubandara, President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunge and Foreign Secretary Kshenuka Seneviratne are the other members of the delegation.
