President Rajapaksa completes 44 years in politics

Today marks 44 years since President Rajapaksa took oaths as a Parliamentarian.


27th May marked a watershed in Sri Lanka’s political history in which a Coalition Government was elected in a General Elections paving the way for several people’s friendly decisions. While the Coalition Government led by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party assumed power of the country, 24-year-old Mahinda Rajapaksa was a courageous youth who was elected to Parliament with the mandate of the people in this election.


Elected to Parliament from the Beliatta electorate with a majority of 7000 votes, no one would have ever dreamt of at that time that this young leader would become a Head of State in the future unifying the country. Mahinda Rajapaksa who took oaths as a Parliamentarian on 07th June 1970 before the Speaker Stanley Tilakeratne, this youngest Parliamentarian embarked on his political journey, by seconding the Throne Speech delivered by Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike making his voice indelible within the political sphere.


He reached the apex in the country’s political journey by assuming power as the country’s sixth Executive President discharging a valuable service on behalf of the people as a Minister, an Opposition Leader and also a Prime Minister.


He also registered a significant victory in the next Presidential election held on 27th January 2010 becoming the country’s Seventh Executive President and thereby becoming a proud leader who uprooted the deadliest terrorist outfit which plagued the country for 30 years. It was this great leader who entered politics representing the Beliatta electorate united the country by dousing the fire of war and enthroning peace enabling the nation to lead happy lives.
