UNP again trying to strengthen forces against the country – Minister Premajayantha

Minister Susil Premajayantha has accused the United National Party of attempting to go against the country and strengthen forces against the motherland during the period in which the humanitarian operations were operative as well as today.

Reports are being published that the Committee appointed by United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navaneethen Pillay to probe alleged war crimes against Sri Lanka is scheduled to begin its activities in the next few days. It was in this respect that a decision has already been taken to hold a debate to decide whether the Committee should be granted permission to enter Sri Lanka to undertake a probe.

It was agreed at a Party Leaders meeting summoned recently on a request signed by a group of Parliamentarians, to hold a two-day debate. Accordingly Parliament will decide whether the Committee of Navi Pillay should be allowed to hold an inquiry within the country. However, the United National Party and some of its Party members are averse to the holding of such a Parliamentary debate.

UNP Deputy President and Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella expressing views to a weekend newspaper published today had said that the conduct of such a debate was a wastage of funds and time. Lakshman Kiriella is an MP who made a statement during the decisive state of the humanitarian operations that any bull could wage a war.

In the meantime, United National Party Colombo District Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake also expressing views to an English weekend newspaper had pointed out that it is unavoidable to prevent through Parliament, efforts made by the Committee to hold an inquiry against the Government and its chief. Mr. Karunanayake was also an MP who belittled the war heroes during the decisive stage of the humanitarian operations.

In the meantime, the United National Party too recently issuing a statement had mentioned that attempts made by the Pillay Committee to arrive in Sri Lanka for an inquiry cannot be prevented.

Minister Susil Premajayantha said that what the United National Party was doing through such stands was not strengthening the Government but injecting strength to the Tamil Diaspora against the country and also forces against the motherland.

The Minister said that NGOs, Western Organizations and outfits loyal to the LTTE tried to blow up the incidents that took place during the liberation of the Tamil civilians and build up an opinion that war crimes had taken place. But during that occasion, the UNP did not utter a word. But the Minister pointed out that as he said earlier that these UNP MPs spoke undermining the operations of the war heroes. This, he added is the main reason that they point out that this should not be debated in Parliament and the Committee should be permitted to come to Sri Lanka. He said it was the UNP which sought foreign interference in every internal affair of the country.
