Water issue after oil contaminates Kelani River -- Updates 2

Add comments

Yesterday's water issue in Colombo .... debatable?

As a result of oil coming in contact with waters of Kelani River from which water is absorbed into the Ambatale Water Treatment Plant once again, was notified by the Water Supply Board to consumers in Colombo, Dehiwala, Mt. Lavinia and Kotte Urban Council Areas that the water supply would be
stopped yesterday (28). Whatever it is, it was only for a period of just 2 hours that the water supply has been stopped because of this problem. Though the water supply was stopped during the period 11.00 a.m. to about 1.00 p.m. consumers who panicked from this announcement hurried to purchase bottled-water at exorbitant prices.

After the incident of last 17th, leaving room for a repetition of yet the same issue thus brought upon a disappointment to the masses. Whatever it is, the Water Board is still in a quandary over this incident which took place yesterday. A spokesman of the Board mentioned that they are still trying to figure out whether the Coca Cola Company who was responsible for allowing oil to mix with Kelani River on a previous occasion had in this instance too mixed oil or whether the oil deposited on the banks of the river had once again got mixed with the water during a period when the water level rose. In any case, the Colombo water supply has by now come back to normal.
