Bili pooja at Hindu devalas in Jaffna domain ... disallowed -- Judge Illanvelian orders!

Bili pooja at Hindu devalas in Jaffna domain ... disallowed -- Judge Illanvelian orders!

Mr. Manicavagar Illanvelian, High Court Judge who came into focus sometime back in relation to the incident of Vidya student's murder and for having expressed his verdict and also for having dedicated himself for a police officer who was subjected to a crime because of his ownself  has
now given a special court order yesterday in Jaffna. It is by prohibiting bili poojas or sacrifices taking place in Hindu temples in the domain of Jaffna. This final decision was arrived at against annual sacrifices conducted in Narasimmar Kovil in Kavunawaththa, which case has been going on at length.

The party which was in favour of sacrifices said that this ancient tradition which is about 300 years old should continue further. However, the judge mentioned that upto then it had been the butcher's law that has been in effect to continue this practice and at a kovil which is a public location where a crowd of about ten or fifteen thousand gather ... killing three hundred or five hundred fowls or goats is a punishable offence. He further pointed out that knowing about this crime all the time, provincial secretaries who were on duty from time to time had willfully issued licences to kill animals. Though Mallakam Magistrate Court had given their approval in 2014 to proceed with these sacrifice-activities, Magistrate Courts cannot permit bili pooja activities to be carried out, he pointed out. Though these activities go on at other places, he is unable to implement laws, but he stated that killing animals for bili poojas within the relevant area of Jaffna Courts is prohibited.
