The Customs has seized 11.5 million cigarettes which had been illegally imported to the country.
The Customs said that this illegal stock of cigarettes was uncovered during the clearing of goods at the container yard at Orugodawatte. The stock worth 43 million rupees has been seized when it was being transported to an establishment which dispatches goods sent by migrant workers. These have been imported mentioning fake addresses from locations such as Hunupitiya, Mattakkuliya, Seeduwa, Ragama, Pannipitiya and Beruwala.
The cigarettes which had been produced in China had been imported to the country from Dubai. The total stock of cigarettes so far seized by the Sri Lanka Customs Revenue Monitoring Division during this year exceeds 8.5 million.
