Opposition stages a media pageant in Parliament boycotting the budget

Add comments

President Rajapaksa, as the Minister of Finance and Planning presented the 68th budget of the Sri Lanka Parliament today. The participation of the Opposition when a budget is being present is vital. Isn’t it improper for the Opposition to boycott it?

The Budget is an important task which allocates financial grants for development of a country in the coming year and to provide relief to the public. The participation of the opposition in the budget debate is important as it gives an openness to the proposals through a debate.

The people appoint a Government and an Opposition through their ballot to raise voices in Parliament on their behalf.

Isn’t it improper for the United National Party as a responsible opposition and also for the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna which has only three members in Parliament to boycott the budget? Or haven’t they got the guts to listen to a budget which is being presented by people’s Government?

Although Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe and his members were in the Parliamentary Complex, they boycotted the budget presented by President Rajapaksa as the Minister of Finance. The people who elected them to Parliament will not endorse their actions. Expressions made to the media by certain United National Party Parliamentarians who were not in the House when the budget was presented are ridiculous. Isn’t it a political joke for UNP members who could not face the Government within the House making statements to the electronic media?

The people who elected the members of the United National Party and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna will surely take a decision for shunning their responsibilities.
