The creation of an artificial beach at Marawila is progressing successfully.
The programme of creating an artificial beach from Marawila to Mudukatuwa by pumping sand from the sea is progressing successfully. Sand is being pumped from a distance of nine kilometers from the deep sea with the help of a vessel. The project is being carried out in two stages. 1800 metres of the artificial beach will be developed under the first stage. Its cost is in the region of 615 million rupees. The second stage is estimated to cost 820 million rupees and it is planned to develop a two kilometer artificial beach.
The beach from Marawila to Mudukatuwa was subject to serious sea erosion devastating 234 houses. Massive damage was also caused to coconut cultivations. Sea erosion also severely impacted the fishery industry and the hotel industry. Attempts made in the past few years to prevent sea erosion did not yield successful results.
Director General of the Coast Conservation Department Anil Premaratne said that accordingly the most appropriate solution to this major issue and minimizing sea erosion was the pumping of sand from the deep sea and creating an artificial coast.
