Tourist arrivals have soared by 27 percent. The increase registered last month is mainly attributed to the high number of arrivals from countries such as China, the Maldives, India and Russia.
The Tourism Development Authority pointed out that following the peaceful environment prevailing in the island the high acclamation received by Sri Lanka internationally, the number of tourist arrivals has risen to 27.9 percent. The Authority said this is a notable rise when compared with the figures in the corresponding period last year. The number of tourist arrivals last month exceeded 128,000. Accordingly, the number of tourist arrivals in October last year was 774,151.
The total tourist arrivals last month had exceeded 940, 015. Many parts in the island are being developed as tourist attractive zones. A majority of foreigners display a special interest in visiting areas in the North and East. The Tourism Development Authority is optimistic that in the face of these achievements the target of attracting 2.5 million tourists by the year 2016 could be easily achieved.
