Scientists are conducting a study they hope will dramatically increase the number of donor lungs available to patients. They’re using donor organs to find out the best way to preserve the lungs, which unlike other solid organs live for several hours after death.
These lungs are being kept alive by the team of scientists in this laboratory. The team is hoping the medical progress they make here will benefit the many thousands of people who hope their lives will be transformed by a transplant. Researchers believe we’re not reaching the full potential of lung donation and many more could be made available for transplant.
Unlike other parts in bodies, lungs are preserved by the air left inside, it stops the immediate onset of decay.
