The damage unleashed by the terrorists to the country for 30 years is inestimable.
Some are attempting to forget the cruel murders carried out by the terrorists throughout the dark period. But the episodes of their brutality are being reminisced to portray the viciousness of terrorism to the entire world.
The tiger terrorists unleashed a massive attack at the Forward Defence Line affiliated to Polonnaruwa-Trincomalee border villages on 2nd December 1992. The war heroes succeeded in driving away the terrorists after a battle which raged several hours. However, 18 brave soldiers sacrificed their lives. In 1993, on a day like today there was a heavy face to face battle between the war heroes and the terrorists in the Ichchlampattu area in Trincomalee. The terrorists suffered heavy damages in the battle, but the country lost the valuable lives of eight war heroes.
On 2nd December 1996, the terrorists unleashed an attack on a group of brave soldiers on foot patrol in the Jaffna town. Four soldiers made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the country. On 2nd December 1997, the terrorists attacked a bus carrying a group of soldiers of the 214th Brigade. Nine soldiers were killed in this assault. On the same day, there were two clashes in the Kanagarayankulam and Nirveli areas in Vavuniya. Five brave soldiers made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the country.
On 2nd December in the year 2000, a group of terrorists entered the Kalawanchikudi area and was getting ready to launch an assault on the soldiers. But the soldiers instantly acted totally making defunct the plans of the terrorists. But two soldiers lost their lives in this incident. On 2nd December 2006, the terrorists unleashed a hand grenade on a military bunker in the Velvettithurai area. Two war heroes who were engaged in operations were killed.
On 2nd December 2007, the ruthless terrorists launched an assault on the Forward Defence Line at Periyathampanai in Mannar. The troops launched counter attacks and consolidated the security. However, two soldiers made supreme sacrifices. Meanwhile four war heroes made supreme sacrifices in several clashes which erupted in Kilinochchi and at Kumalamunai area in Mullaitivu on 2nd December 2008.
By the time terrorism which was in place in this manner was uprooted from the country on 18tn May 2009, seven civilians and 67 war heroes had been killed on 02nd December throughout the dark era. The gallant soldiers who advanced into terrorist strongholds risking their lives routed terrorism and brought permanent peace to the country under the prudent leadership of President Rajapaksa. But certain local as well as foreign forces are active to destroy the peace enthroned in the country in this manner.
Certain Western forces including the United States and Britain are making various allegations against the country including accusations related to human rights with the aim of denigrating the country and achieving their parochial objectives. But it is sad to note that not a single human rights organization was speaking about the human rights breaches of those countries.
The country’s patriotic fraternity has clearly proved to the world that they will not permit anyone to hinder the peace that has been won by them.
