Farmers claim that the proposal made in the 2014 budget to continuously provide the fertilizer subsidy is a victory for them.
Many benefits had been proposed in the budget for agricultural livelihoods and irrigation development.
An allocation of 1700 million rupees was proposed in the budget to develop schemes canals and anicuts of the already completed Schemes such as Rambaken Oya, Deduru Oya and livelihood avenues as well as the processing of land. An additional allocation of 14,000 million rupees was proposed in the budget to expedite work on the Uma Oya, Yan Oya and Moragahakanda Development Schemes which would expand the supply of drinking water and irrigation activities to many remote areas in the North and the South.
As requested by the peasants from the President, action has been initiated to provide all varieties of fertilizer at a subsidized rate of 350 rupees for paddy cultivation during the Maha and Yala seasons. Also it was proposed to provide all other varieties of fertilizer at a subsidized rate of 1250 rupees.
The proposal made to consolidate the sale of commodities such as potatoes, onions, dried fish and varieties of grains through the centres to be established by the Divi Neguma Agrarian Services with the coordination of Lak Sathosa, has earned the acclamation of the farmers. Also the proposal made to implement the farmers’ pension scheme to grant a monthly pension of 1250 rupees for farmers over 63 years of age with effect from next January has earned commendation from the farmers.
