Minister Johnston Fernando has given an assurance that there will be no price hike in essential commodities during the festive season. He said that a control price would be imposed on rice to maintain price stability. The Minister made these references opening the 280th CWE outlet at Pollatthapitiya in Kurunegala
The Minister said that selling rice at 60 or 62 rupees is not an issue as the local cultivator should be protected. He said the cultivator as well as the consumer should be safeguarded. If not, the farmer will give up cultivation. He assured a shortage of essential commodities will be experienced during the festive season and also the traders will not be permitted to increase the prices of commodities and a stable price will be maintained.
He mentioned that the Government during festive seasons has succeeded in providing essential commodities at reduced prices. The Minister added that during this festive season the traders will not be permitted to increase prices.
