Dark memories on 18th December

Add comments

No one can forget the 30-year dark period during which terrorism plagued the country. The number of lives taken away by the terrorists is inestimable.

The nature of the thirst of the tiger terrorists for blood is mentioned in this episode.

Seven war heroes were killed in an assault mooted by the tiger terrorists in the Batticaloa area on a day like today in the year 1984. Fighting raged between the war heroes and the terrorists on 18th December 1990. Eight war heroes were killed in a landmine planted by the terrorists along the Anuradhapura-Trincomalee road. Major General C.L. Wijertne Commander of the 22nd Division and Police Superintendent Richard Wijesekara died in the terrorist attack.

It was on December 18th in 1999 that the terrorist launched a suicide attack at a United Front public rally organized at the Colombo Municipal Council Grounds. 16 persons were killed in this suicide attack. In an attack unleashed on the same day on Major General Lucky Algama, he along with eleven Sinhala civilians were killed. Five members of the Security Forces were killed in another attack mooted near the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo. Two war heroes sacrificed their lives on behalf of the country in a clash in the North on 18th December 2008.

Accordingly the number killed on 18th December when terrorism reigned in the country for three decades was 60. This included 29 civilians and 31 war heroes. If peace was not enthroned in the country annihilating terrorism on 18th May 2009, the country would have lost a large number of civilians.

Lankans would have been deprived of a motherland today if the murderous tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and LTTE terrorism was not ended from the Nanthikadal Lagoon under the prudent Leadership of President Rajapaksa who is the Commander in Chief. All patriotic citizens are determined to safeguard the freedom won by the gallant soldiers, under the guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, risking their lives. However certain Western forces are still leveling human rights accusations against Sri Lanka. But the entire nation have taken the lead against these forces due to the bold leadership of the President.

But the entire nation is explicitly aware of their motives and had already displayed to the world that they will not hesitate to rout such forces.
