The second stage of the modernized Racecourse Grandstand is now opened to the public. The renovated Colombo Racecourse grandstand was declared open by Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa at a ceremony held at the Racecourse Ground. The opening took place in the presence of Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. The reconstruction of the racecourse grounds commenced under the Colombo City beautification programme on the instructions of President Rajapaksa and the guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
The reconstruction under the first stage carried out with the immense contribution of the security forces members was declared open recently. It was the second stage of the project that was vested in the public yesterday.
Having established while retaining its historic importance and architectural uniqueness, the new refurbished Racecourse Grandstand comprises a pavilion, restaurants, dress boutiques, sport shops, handy craft and gift shops. The old racecourse, once a land mark site in Colombo had been neglected for a considerable period of time.
Security Forces members who played a significant role in the modernizations were feted in parallel to the opening ceremony. Senior Minister A.H.M. Fowzie, Ministers Prof. G.L. Peiris and Rajitha Senaratne, Parliamentarians J.R.P. Suriyappepruma and Duminda Silva and Chiefs of the Security Forces graced the occasion.
