A stock of expired food has been recovered from the Pettah area in Colombo.
The Consumer Affairs Authority raided a store at Fourth Cross Street in Pettah this morning and seized stocks of expired dry fish, big onions and goraka. Head of the Special Raids Unit of the Consumer Affairs Authority Pradeep Kaluthara Arachchi who was involved in the conduct of the raid said that the spoilt goods were about to be released for canteens.
In the meantime the Consumer Affairs Authority also raided a canteen which is operative in Bankshall Street in Fort this afternoon and seized unhygienic food. It was found that food was being prepared at this canteen within an grimy environment. The Authority said that those who visit the canteen had been provided a sauce turned out of pumpkin instead of tomato sauce.
Health officials had succeeded in recovering a stock of expired food items during a raid conducted in Batticaloa.
An operation is also underway in Batticaloa to nab traders who use substandard weight and measures. Officials of the Consumer Affairs Authority have instituted legal action against 20 persons who had used substandard weights and measures following the examination of 55 shops.
The Davulagala Police had succeeded in uncovering a large scale racket of distributing expired food stocks after altering the dates. The raid was carried out on a tip off received by Officer in Charge of the Davulagala Police Vijitha Wijayakoon. The Police apprehended a group of suspects from a storage facility at Elamaldeniya in Gelioya for altering dates of expired food stocks. Among the items were wheat flour, sugar and dates. It has been revealed that expired food stocks withdrawn from Pettah had been purchased at low prices for the mooting of this racket.
