Families are now permitted to enter Padiyapelella which was uninhabited due to a landslide threat.
Almost half of the Padiyapelella town was threatened with landslides due to the extreme weather conditions experienced for nine days in the entire area. Thereafter the National Building Research Institute uninhabited the entire town and action was initiated to relocate the entire town. With the mediation of the Disaster Management Ministry, the uphill task of conserving the town again was undertaken incurring an expenditure of over 50 million rupees.
This project has now been successfully completed. The second bridge built with bricks by the Britons in 1847 is also located in this town. There were 160 trading establishments while the number of families living in the town was 235. The Padiyapelella town is located on either side of Belihuloya which is flowing to the Randenigala Reservoir from Mandaram Nuwara. It is also the only commercial town for several areas within the suburbs.
The National Buildings Research Institute has carried out the constructions and processed the land in a manner conserving the entire Padiyapelella town. It pointed out that a need will not arise to relocate the town again.
