The birth centenary celebrations of the late Ven. Baddegama Wimalawanse Anunayake Thera were held under the patronage of the President.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa who visited the Sri Lanka Maha Piriven Vihare in Maradana this morning participated in religious observations. Thereafter he inaugurated the Dharma Mandira constructed in memory of the late Thera. After paying floral tributes to the late Baddegama Wimalawanse Thera, the President participated in a ceremony to issue a first day cover and a commemorative stamp to mark his birth centenary. Thereafter the President handed over the Akthaparta to Ven. Nagoda Amarawanse Thera who is appointed the Chief Sanghanayake of the Western Province. The scroll was earlier handed over to the President by the Maha Nayaka Thera of the Ramanna Nikaya Most Venerable Napane Pemasiri Thera. The President was also presented with a felicitation volume dedicated to Ven. Nagoda Amarawanse Thera. The Thera who plays pioneering role with regard to programmes of national interest is also engaged in the propagation of the Dhamma overseas. He was appointed to the position in appreciation of the social and religious services rendered by him. Ven. Amarawanse Thera handed over a memento to the President appreciating the services rendered for religious harmony. Members of the Maha Sangha, Ministers and Parliamentarians including Minister Bandula Gunawardena, and government officials participated in the occasion.
