Add comments

Five thousand kilo grammes of potatoes unfit for human consumption have been seized in Dambulla.

The Dambulla Police said that the potatoes were found in a storehouse near the Economic Centre. The raid was carried out by the Public Health Inspectors of the Urban Council and the Police on a tip-off to the Dambulla Mayor. The storehouse that stocked the rotten potatoes was sealed.

The Ministry of Health has announced that raids will be continued from next week on outlets that sell, distribute and handle foods that are unfit for consumption. Complaints have been received that certain individuals show scant regard for food safety. The raids will be carried out continuously for 4 days from 23rd.

The Health Ministry said that all bakeries, restaurants, hotels as well as food, vegetable, fruit, meat and bottled water outlets will be inspected. The Ministry called on the public to lodge their complaints at the Health Ministry, the Central Food Control Unit of the Colombo Municipal Council and the Consumer Affairs Authority on its hotline 1977.
