Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne announced in Parliament today that every Wednesday will be a Public Day and it is mandatory that all officials of State institutions remain in their offices on this day.
UNP Parliamentarian Buddhika Pathirana said that there are no officials in Ministries on Wednesdays, which are Public Days. He requested to discuss this issue at the next Cabinet meeting and advise officials to remain at least on Wednesdays.
In response Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne said that instructions had already been issued to state officials to remain within their offices on Wednesdays to meet the public. It is mandatory that they remain in office on this day. He said that if they are informed of officials who are not in office on this day, some action could be initiated.
JVP Parliamentarian Sunil Hendunnetti said that there is an age limit in public administration. The retirement age is 60 years and talented new officials should be recruited. But he said there are high officials who have exceeded 60 years.
Minister Seneviratne said that the retirement age in the country is 60 years. But it is the President who is tasked with the powers of appointing Ministry Secretaries. The President makes appointments without considering the age limit but considering the uphill task vested in them. Not only the incumbent President but other Presidents also did the same. Accordingly it is competent and experienced officials who are appointed as Ministry Secretaries.
