15 Billion rupees spent on road development in Galle

15 Billion Rupees is being spent on road development in the Galle, Hiniduma and Baddegama electorates. The President while vesting in the public many developed roads, also launched work on more road development projects. The President issued instruction to officials to immediately launch more development projects in the South.


Many road development projects were launched in the Galle, Hiniduma and Baddegama electorates incurring an expenditure of 15 Billion rupees. The main intention of this work is to create a developed road network based on the Mahinda Chinthana Way Forward. President Rajapaksa while vesting in the public many developed roads also launched projects for the development of many roads in these areas yesterday.


The President declared open the Pitigala-Pelawatte highway reconstructed at a cost of 1080 million rupees. The road which is about eight kilometres also includes three bridges.


1484 million rupees is to be spent on the reconstruction of the Pitigala-Elpitiya highway. This road of which reconstruction was launched under the patronage of the President, will be ready by next year.


Thereafter the President unveiled the development of the Galle-Udugama road. This 35 kilometre road will be expanded during the reconstruction and the estimated cost of the work is around 4642 million rupees.


President Rajapaksa also declared open the Panangala-Gangarama Bridge in Hiniduma which was a long felt need of the residents in the area. The 52 metre long bridge is seven metres wide. The expenditure incurred on this work was 130 million rupees.


The President participated in the launch of work on the Opatha-Pitabeddara road in Hiniduma yesterday. 6260 million rupees is to be spent on this 31-kilometre road. The work is expected to be completed by the year 2016.


The President joined in the opening of the Batahena-Dunhena road. It was reconstructed at a cost 220 million rupees. Villagers in the Batahena, Habarakada and Kumburegama villages will benefit.


During his tour of Galle, the President monitored the transport facilities available in the area. Thereafter he issued instructions to the Secretary of the Highways Ministry to immediately undertake the reconstruction of many roads.
