20 million robbery in shop in Negombo
An incident was reported day-before-yesterday (Feb 17) where local and foreign cash amounting to the value of 20 million was robbed from a well-known money exchanger and jewellery shop named Jewel Lanka in the town of Negombo. Scenes of the moment when a weapon was shown to the cashier of the establishment by two robbers are to be seen on the CCTV cameras.
It was revealed at police investigations that two other accomplices who had come in support of the robbers had been waiting by the roadside waiting for the others. The police have been able to recover both motor bicycles on which the robbers had come. One has been found on Kimbulapitiya area while the other has been found in Gampaha area lying by the roadside.
The CCTV cameras have recorded how the robbers who came to the establishment were poking the cash bundles into their bags. As they had come wearing helmets, it had been a difficult task to identify their faces.
Fingerprints on the two motor bicycles have been taken for identification purposes; but so far the suspects have not been taken into custody.
