The Police will launch the automated finger print system to identify criminals tomorrow. This will provide an opportunity to secure reports on finger prints within about three minutes. Hitherto it took 14 days to secure such reports.
This special automated machine will be unveiled by the Defence Secretary at the Deyata Kirula Exhibition tomorrow.
Expressing views to the media on this special automated finger print machine, Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that hitherto finger prints were checked by viewing through lenses and making comparisons. It was an uphill task and time consumption was high.
At present developed countries in the world are using the automated finger print system. These finger prints are stored in software and within minutes it is possible to determine whether a suspect is a criminal. Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Police Chief N.K. Ilangakoon mediated in this process and invited Sri Lankan experts to get involved in such a process. He said that the responsibility was tasked with the ICT. They entrusted it to the Computer Division of the Colombo University. They derived a software with the minimum cost.
The Police Spokesman said that they now possess this software. He revealed that finger prints of 370 thousand criminals have already been included in this software. He added that it will be possible to determine criminals within three minutes from tomorrow.
