Dark memories on 14th February

Add comments

The aim of the tiger terrorists was to take away as many lives as possible. The massive damage unleashed by the terrorists throughout the 30-year dark era is inestimable.

In addition to brutal killings the terrorists also devastated public property, displaying their brutality to the world. These features recount the ruthlessness of the tiger terrorists in the fear psychosis period.

The tiger terrorists lurking in the Aiyathimale area on 14th February 1992 unleashed a massive attack on a group of war heroes on foot patrol. As a result of the assault 15 war heroes made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the country. The terrorists mooted another attack on 14th February 1996, in the Pulawadi area taking away the live of five war heroes.

These ruthless tiger terrorists launched several massive attacks on war heroes in the Damminna and Vavuniya area on 14th February 1998. 20 war heroes sacrificed their lives on behalf of the country in this attack. The tiger terrorists opened fire and killed two innocent civilians who were engaged in cultivation in the Puttur area on 14th February 1999 shocking the entire area. Again on 14th February 2008, these barbaric terrorists carried out another attack in the Muhamalia area taking away the lives of two brave soldiers. In the year 2009, also on a day like today, thee cruel terrorists unleashed several attacks in the Puthukudiyiruppu and Kuppilankulam areas, killing seven war heroes.

Terrorism which was a scourge to the country was annihilated from the Nanthikadal Lagoon. That historic day was 18th May 2009. By then the terrorists had bumped off 64 persons on 14th February throughout the dark era. This included two civilians while the other 62 were war heroes.

The members of the Security Forces who advanced in the operations reaching target under the dynamic leadership of President Rajapaksa and the proper guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa totally succeeded in liberating the country from this menace and enthroning permanent peace. It is sad to note that human rights organizations which talk very highly of the safeguarding of fundamental rights are reticent on these inhuman killings and terrorists activities.

Sri Lanka is in a position to prove with evidence how the brutal terrorists massacred innocent civilians who were languishing under the jackboot of the terrorists and were brutally slaughtered for going against them. It was within such a back that the heroic soldiers liberated more than 300 thousand innocent Tamil civilians sans inflicting any bruises or injuries to them and offered them food and drink. These brave soldiers displayed their human qualities not only by word but also by deed.

Countries such as Britain and the United States accusing Sri Lanka of breaching human rights are demanding reports in this respect. But sufficient information has already been exposed to the world on the flagrant human rights violations committed by them. How is that the terrorist activities committed by the terrorists spreading insurgency does not amount to a violation of human rights.

These heroic soldiers who brought freedom to the country through their humanitarian operation gave a fitting lesson to the world. It was the lesson of protecting human rights of innocent civilians during a battle waged against the terrorists. It is brutality of terrorists who killed war heroes who were engaged in the task of liberating the civilians and granting them relief, that is being reminded in these episodes.
