General Manager Railways B.A.P. Ariyaratne has appealed to retired engine drivers to join the service on a contract basis for the normal operation of trains. Although a majority of the drivers have not joined the strike, the drivers who have reported to work are not sufficient to the operation of trains according to the normal schedule. As such the General Manager is calling on retired drivers to join the service on a contract basis.
Action was being taken to provide a service to the commuters sans any hindrances. He pointed out the Department had taken a decision to recall retired engine drivers on a contract basis. Accordingly, a request was being made to retired engine driver to report to the Railway Control Room at Maradana, the Nawalapitiya Control Office or the Anuradhapura Control Room as soon as possible. Such drivers would be deployed for the operation of trains and given an opportunity to serve on a contract basis.
