Onus of the Bank network should be to uplift the village entrepreneur – President

President Rajapaksa has said that the responsibility of the Bank network is to give a helping hand to the rural entrepreneur and uplift them. The President made this observation handing over letters of appointment to Transaction Service Assistants newly recruited to serve in the People’s Bank.

The handing over of letters of appointment to the newly recruited Transaction Service Assistants to serve in the People’s Bank took place at the BMICH this morning under the patronage of President Rajapaksa. 600 such Letters of Appointment representing all Provinces except the Western and Southern Provinces were handed over. Symbolizing the handing of Letters of Appointment the President gave the appointment letters to 50 newly recruited persons.

Chairman of the People’s Bank expressing views on the Bank which has identified the pulse of the people and was engaged in the provision of a people’s friendly service said that as a very strong Bank, he is proud to announce that his Bank is a stakeholder of the country’s development. The ownership of the Bank lies with the people. The Government is the people of this country. Those who are serving in Bank are children of the people. Those who are being recruited will be serving on behalf of their parents and their neighbours. The village strengthens the economy. The People’s Bank lends a helping hand to the businessmen and entrepreneurs.

Addressing the function, President Rajapaksa said that the Government has taken many decisions to safeguard the Bank network of the country as enunciated in the Mahinda Chinthana. The President reminded that not only the Banks but also all state establishments were saved from privatization by the present Government.

The President said that action was taken to safeguard the Bank as pledged in the Mahinda Chinthana. Not only this Bank but also other state establishments were safeguarded from privatization. Politicos in the past interfered in every sector. There was an era in which loans from Banks were given to their friends and relatives sans any sureties. The order to give millions of rupees was given through chits or else through a telephone call. The President said that this is still an issue to the Banks. It should be looked through a people’s friendly angle. Money deposited may be in Banks in villages such as in Hambantota, Anuradhapura, Kilinochchi or Jaffna are being given as loans to big shots in Colombo. The cash deposited in the villages should be provided to the villages and upgrade the entrepreneur in the village. It is because of this that they are providing loans sans interest to women entrepreneurs. The President called on the new recruits to serve those who come to their Bank and love their Banks.

Senior Minister A.H.M. Fowzie, Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Parliamentarians Duminda Silva, Thilanga Sumathipala, A.H.M. Aswer, J.R.P. Suriyapperuma and Janawaka Wakkumbura and General Manager of the People’s Bank N. Wasantha Kumara were among those present on the occasion.
