External Affairs Minister ready to respond to allegations against Sri Lanka in Geneva

The US Resolution against Sri Lanka has been tabled at the UN Human Rights Sessions. The Resolution has been submitted by the United States, Britain, Montenegro, Macedonia and Mauritius.


Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris who left for Geneva today is due to respond to allegations made against Sri Lanka at the Sessions tomorrow.


Sri Lanka is ready to respond to the proposals that have been made and that are to be made at the United Nations Human Rights Council and also to express views condemning it. The Sri Lankan delegation to the 25th UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva is led by Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris. He is slated to address the sessions tomorrow condemning the proposals against Sri Lanka and also submit a report in respect of Sri Lanka.


The Sri Lankan External Affairs Minister is also scheduled to meet the UN Human Rights Chief on Thursday. This is the third Resolution to be submitted by the United States with respect to Sri Lanka before Geneva. It is reported that the report compiled by the UN Human Rights Chief Navaneethen Pillay is due to be submitted on the 26th of this month.


Meanwhile, the other members of the Sri Lankan delegation to the sessions are due to reach Geneva within the next few days.


The External Affairs Ministry said that the Sri Lankan delegation will be represented by Ministers Mahinda Samarasinghe and Nimal Siripala de Silva, Parliamentarian Sajin Vass Gunawardena, Attorney General Palitha Fernando, Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunge and Foreign Secretary Kshenuka Seneviratne and Sri Lanka’s Resident Representative of the UN and Ambassador in Geneva Ravinatha Ariyasisnghe. The Geneva sessions which opened yesterday will continue until the 28th of this month. Representatives of 47 member countries are participating.
