Norway’s former Peace Envoy Erik Solheim has said that what Prabhakaran wanted during the final stages of the war was to use innocent Tamil civilians as human shields. But the Lankan troops protected them.
Former Norwegian Minister and Peace Envoy Erik Solheim has made these references in his autobiography. Mr. Solheim has mentioned that although an appeal was made for Prabhakaran to surrender to the Sri Lanka troops, he did not agree to it. He achieved his destruction following the dire decision taken by him that the Government should halt the battle waged against them. After the Government declared no Fire Zones, the Tamil civilians deserted the LTTE and arrived in these Zones. The troops accorded them protection. Erik Solheim pointed out that the LTTE prevented the civilians entering the No Fire Zones and used them as human shields. The terrorist outfit also killed civilians who attempted to reach the No Fire Zone.
Solheim has also mentioned in his autobiography that even though Prabhakaran sought international support keeping the civilians as human shields, it was the Sri Lankan Government that received world support and not the LTTE.
