Government Parliamentarians say Opposition Leader’s privileges had not been breached

Add comments

Privileges of the Opposition Leader had not all been breached. The Government has strongly deplored the attempts made by him to paralyze the development schemes in the country under the cover of these privileges.

Government Ministers were responding to queries raised on the development project related to the reclamation of the sea area in the vicinity of the Galle Face Green.

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe said that the Prime Minister and the Minister read two reports. They did so sans any knowledge. But officials who prepare them should also assume responsibility.

Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva said the Opposition leader has arrived at a decision and was saying that it is not true. When any statement is made there is no strategy to investigate its veracity. The response should be accepted. As such the people will determine whether the statements made by the Opposition or Government are correct or not.

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa said a special debate could be requested.

Project Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena queried as to how they could make replies to suit the Opposition Leader. The Minister said that his Parliamentary members provided responses to suit him. He pointed out that the country would not have had a Ruwanweli Seya, if Ranil Wickremasinghe was there when it was being built. He would have queried at that time whether tenders were called for the building of the Ruwanweli Seya.

Mr. Wickremasinghe said that he did not secure it from a newspaper.

The Speaker said that he did not see a breach of privileges. He said the best was to seek a debate and make further submissions for any further clarifications. The Speaker said that he considered that the Parliament and the people should be aware of, when major projects are being launched. He added that no doubts would prevail if details are being presented in Parliament.
