The Government has emphasized a shortage of fertilizer does not exist in the market.
Lanka Fertilizer Company Limited and Commercial Fertilizer Company have been distributing the subsidized fertilizer among the farmers from the year 2005. From then onwards, a 50 kilogram bag of fertilizer had been given to the farmers for 16 cultivation seasons at a subsidized rate of 350 rupees. It was one of the measures adopted by the Government to uplift local cultivation.
Initially the fertilizer subsidy was given only for farmers. Thereafter from the year 2011 action was initiated to grant the fertilizer for the cultivation of tea, rubber and coconut as well as to minor export crops. The annual expenditure incurred by the Government in this process is 40,000 million rupees. The Government emphasizes that at present there are sufficient fertilizer stocks and these are being issued to the famers sans any obstructions.
