Four Lankans arrested for smuggling gold


A stock of substandard wheat flour has been recovered from Sapugaskanda.

Four Sri Lankan suspects have been apprehended in India with a haul of gold.

The Consumer Affairs Authority discovered a load of substandard wheat flour at Patti-wila, Sapugaskanda during a raid this morning. The raid was conducted following a tip off received by the Special Raids Unit of the Consumer Authority.

The Authority has seized 13,000 kilograms of substandard wheat flour unsuitable for consumption. The value of the load of wheat flour is over 1.1 million rupees.

Meanwhile, Customs officials intercepted at least 16 people, including four Sri Lankans who tried to smuggle a total of 10 kilograms of gold worth 30 million rupees at the Chennai airport on Tuesday. According to airport sources, the gold was found on passengers who reached the city airport from Dubai, Singapore, Muscat and Colombo. Five persons from Kerala had concealed 800 grams in secret compartments in suitcases. Four Sri Lankans and one Indian from Colombo had 800 grams of gold each in their rectums. India media reported that most of them were fined and released.
