President returns home pledging to strengthen bilateral relations with BIMSTEC countries

The Sri Lankan President and BIMSTEC leaders pledge to strengthen relations. The President who addressed the BIMSTEC Summit has returned to the island.


President Rajapaksa who left for Myanmar to participate in the Third BIMSTEC Summit. Addressed the Summit yesterday. In his address he said that terrorism is a threat to the collective security of all nations, in whatever form it is prevalent, in any part of the world. The President seized the opportunity of holding bilateral discussions with several member countries.

The first meet took place with Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. The talks focused attention of the fisheries issues, the cooperation of the Government and the Northern Provincial Council and many other issues significant to the two countries.

The long standing diplomatic ties between Sri Lanka and Myanmar were recalled during the talks the President had with his Myanmar’s counterpart U Thein Sein. The President of Myanmar agreed to a proposal made by President Rajapaksa for the establishment of a Joint Commission and the launch of air services between the two countries. The Myanmar’s President accepted an invitation made by the President to visit Sri Lanka.

During the talks the President had with the Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Haseena, attention was focused on many fields including economic and development. President Rajapaksa also had talks with the Nepalese Prime Minister Sushil Koirala.
