Customs have seized a stock of rosewood worth one billion rupees. It is the largest stock of rosewood that has been seized in Sri Lanka’s customs history.
The Biodiversity, Cultural and National Heritage Protection Division of Sri Lanka Customs succeeded in recovering the stock of rosewood during a search operation. The value of the stock weighting 420 metric ton exceeded one billion rupees. 28 containers with 3600 logs are in the custody of the Sri Lanka Customs. Rosewood is considered as a tropical regional plant conventional to Southeast and East African continents.
Many institutions enforcing international regulations had been engaged in an untiring effort for several years to uncover information on this rosewood racket carried out between East African and Far Eastern countries.
Customs Director General Jagath P. Jayaweera said that there is an international ban on rosewood. These containers have been brought from African countries to be transshipped to Eastern countries. He said that Sri Lanka Customs are on alert for the seizure of such goods
This is a historic incident. The Customs Director General pointed out that this is the first time in the world that such a large stock of rosewood had been seized. He emphasized that Sri Lanka Customs have now been branded as very effective in the world.
