First Lady Shiranthi Wickremasinghe Rajapaksa has said that children

afflicted with autism should be nurtured with professional care and attention to enable them to be more confident and independent.

The First Lady expressed these views at the 2014 International Seminar on Autism in Malaysia yesterday where she joined her counterparts in Sudan, Kyrgyz Republic, Albania and Morocco to share autism-related initiatives and experiences to help autistic children and eradicate social stigma. The meeting is being attended by First Ladies of 22 countries. The conference opened under the patronage of Malaysian Prime Minister Mohamed Najib Razak. Shiranthi Rajapaksa stressed parents or caretakers should identify the child’s skills that needed to be developed especially as some possess amazing talents.

Citing that creating awareness was an important step to treat the condition, as well as assisting families to cope with it, the First Lady urged society to work together, especially in education and social activities.

Meanwhile the Sri Lankan First Lady called on the First Lady of Malaysia Rosmah Mansor at the Prime Minister’s official residence. On her arrival the Sri Lankan First Lady was accorded a very warm welcome by her Malaysian counterpart. Thereafter they had a cordial discussion.
