Plans are afoot to launch a Monorail Service to overcome traffic congestion in Colombo.
It is expected to be undertaken with assistance from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency.
The Transport Ministry said that several projects have been planned at a cost of 1255 Billion Rupees to overcome traffic congestion within the Colombo City by the year 2035. The Transport Ministry has planned these projects in collaboration with JICA.
Accordingly plans are afoot to launch a monorail service, to locate all buses beginning journeys from Colombo to one centre and to coordinate rail and bus services. It has been revealed that there is a colossal wastage of fuel and human labour as a result of the severe traffic congestion within the Colombo City. The new projects are aimed at saving 213,000 million rupees as a result of operational charges annually.
A decline of 136,000 million rupees in travel time cost is also expected. Accordingly the Transport Ministry said that a massive economic benefit amounting to 349,000 million rupees could be achieved.
