The Department of Meteorology today warned of severe weather conditions resulting from a sudden increase in the wind speeds countrywide.
The Disaster Management Centre quoting the Department of Meteorology said wind speeds would increase to between 70 and 80 kmph because of the tropical convergence zone in the atmosphere above Sri Lanka.
The Met Department also warned of heavy showers of up to 100mm at times. It said the possibility of sudden roughness of the sea areas around the island is high due to active cloudiness.
Showers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Hambantota via Pottuvil and in the deep sea areas off the western coast. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places over the other sea areas around the island.
Meanwhile heavy rains were reported from many parts of the country particularly in the Central hills with the highest rainfall of 77mm reported from Katugastota while a rainfall of 74mm was reported from Matale, Palugaswewa a rainfall of 50mm, Castlereagh 62mm, Kotmale 58mm, Ukuwala 63mm, Mausakelle 45mm, Canyon 48mm and Bogawantalawa 48mm.
In the meantime, Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Centre Pradeep Kodippili has said that despite the heavy rainfall experienced country wide, no disasters have been reported. He also said that the warnings issued for the Districts of Ratnapura, Kegalla and Matale have been lifted.
