Colombo Declaration on Youth launched

The Colombo Declaration on Youth which paves the way for the future path of the world youth has been launched. Its launch took place at the Youth Centre in Maharagama today, the final day of the World Conference on Youth.

Minister Dulles Alahapperuma, Deputy Minister Mohanlal Grero, special representatives of the UN Secretary General Ahmad Al Hendavi and Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representatives to the United Nations Dr. Palitha Kohone were among those present on the occasion. A large gathering of youths representing various countries enthusiastically participated in the occasion.

Addressing the gathering Dr. Palitha Kohone said that they succeeded in launching the Declaration on Youth in the achievement of the development goals beyond 2015.

Thereafter the Colombo Declaration on Youth was handed over to Minister Dulles Alahapperuma, the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative Ahmed Al Hendavi and other state officials.

This Colombo Declaration on Youth will be considered as the document in taking decisions on youth by the United Nations and the respective countries. This Declaration was crafted incorporating decisions and recommendations agreed upon after three days of talks held between young men and women and state officials worldwide for three days. Hitherto the youth and states crafted separate documents and expressed views when formulating documents on youth. This Declaration is a significant and historic document as it has been crafted with views of youths as well as states.

Expressing his views on the occasion the Youth Minister of Nigeria appreciated the conference that was held in Sri Lanka. He described it as an exemplary one. The Nigerian Minister said his country is ready to host the next World Conference on Youth.

Thereafter the theme song of the Youth Conference was played and the youth delegates were seen enthusiastically enjoying the song.

Addressing the gathering, UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy Ahmad Al Hendavi said that not only the United Nations and the States, but also youth sections throughout the world are vested the task of adhering to and implementing the document that was launched with the consensus of everyone.

Minister Dulles Alahapperuma expressed his thanks to all States, youth delegates and all establishments in Sri Lanka which extended their vital support to craft and successfully launch the Colombo Declaration on Youth.

Finally all delegates bid good bye with great emotion and with a positive concept on Sri Lanka.
