The Japanese Government claims that the resolution on Sri Lanka submitted before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva was unhelpful to Sri Lanka. It assured continuous support to Sri Lanka at international fora.
Seiji Kihara, Parliamentary Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan made these references when he met President Rajapaksa at Temple Trees yesterday. He is in the Island on an official visit. He said Japan abstained when the vote on the Resolution on Sri Lanka was taken as it considered the Resolution would not help the island nation. President Rajapaksa asked the Japanese Vice Minister to tell this truth to rest of the world. He mentioned that except for an international inquiry the Government is in the process of implementing all other demands made by sponsors of the Resolution.
Kihara said Japan is not ready to accept biased reports prepared by international bodies. He said they are confident that Sri Lanka is capable of solving its problems one by one.
The Japanese Vice Minister expressed Japan’s hope to further expand ties in economic, trade, investment and maritime security sectors. President Rajapaksa observed Japan is a close friend of Sri Lanka and it is the biggest investor in the island.
Minister Douglas Devananda, Foreign Secretary Kshenuka Senevirathne and Japan’s Ambassador Nobuhito Hobo were present at this meeting.
