If the heroic soldiers under the prudent guidance of the Commander in Chief did not take initiatives to pulverize the LTTE terrorists, no one can estimate the damage they would have unleashed in the country and the lives taken away.
These barbaric insurgents denigrated the entire human kind through these massive disasters to portray to the entire world their brutality and ruthlessness. Today’s episode recalls the atrocities committed by these savage murderers.
An SLTB bus was caught up in a landmine planted by the LTTE terrorists on 01st May 1998. 26 innocent civilians were killed in the resulting explosion. On 01st May 1991 the terrorists lurking in the Trincomalee area unleashed an attack and took away the lives of eight war heroes.
Again in 1993 on May 01st, the LTTE terrorists killed Ranasinghe Premadasa who was the President at that time while he was participating in May Day procession in Colombo. Another 14 civilians who were caught up in this explosion at Armour Street were also killed, alongside the seven war heroes who died in this explosion.
On the same day another terrorist attack was launched at a group of soldiers in the Trincomalee area. There were seven casualties. Palaly in Jaffna was the next target of the ruthless terrorist on 01st May in the year 2000. Eight war heroes died in this assault. Two innocent civilians were killed in another attack mooted by the merciless terrorists in the Vakarai area on 01st May 2002.
In the year 2006 also on a day like today the terrorists entered the Kebetigollewa area and opened fire and killed two farmers who were working on their farmland. On the same day six more civilians were killed in two assaults unleashed by the terrorists at Sinhaya Ulpatha in Kebetigollewa and in Trincomalee.
The cruel terrorists mooted an attack on a group of heroic soldiers at Dutuwewa in the Vavuniya area on 01st May 2008, killing two soldiers. More attacks were launched on the war heroes by the terrorists in the Weliyaanmadama area on 01st May 2009. As a result eight war heroes made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the unity of motherland.
Accordingly terrorism which was a scourge for the country was uprooted on 18th May 2009. By then the terrorists had taken away a total of 116 lives on 01st May throughout the dark era. This included 55 innocent civilians. The other 61 were valiant soldiers.
Members of the Security Forces succeeded in enthroning permanent peace in the country under the unwavering leadership of President Rajapaksa who is also the Commander in Chief and the prudent guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. Many war heroes made supreme sacrifices and also became disabled in the operations launched to bring peace to the country. They are the eternal heroes of our era.
The Leader of the country succeeded in ending terrorism and providing a lesson to the world. Now he is providing another lesson to the world by taking care of the heroes who had become totally disabled discharging a valuable service on behalf of the country.
Certain local as well as extraneous forces cannot understand the real heroism of the members of the forces. But the entire nation expresses its gratitude to these war heroes and cares for them as it was they who brought freedom to the country.
