Dark memories on 19th May

No one can say as to how many lives were taken away by the tiger terrorists who unleashed carnage with the intention of quenching their thirst for blood. These merciless terrorists also destroyed property in this manner, with the purpose of debilitating the country’s economy.

All these terrorist activities drew to a close due to the valiant efforts made by the war heroes to uproot terrorism from the country. A bus that was plying from Erakkandi to Deegawapi on 19th May 1991 came under a bomb attack unleashed by the tiger terrorists.


Five innocent civilians who were travelling in the bus to meet their day to day requirements died in this bomb attack. On the same day two war heroes lost their lives in a terrorist attack mooted on a group of soldiers along the Batticaloa-Trincomalee road.

The next target of the terrorists on May 19th was in the year 1995. In a heinous assault on the Elephant Pass Defence Zone the terrorists killed seven war heroes. Two innocent civilians died in a terrorist attack launched at Kivulegala in the Kebethigollewa area on 19th May 1996.

Seven war heroes sacrificed their lives on behalf of the motherland in two terrorist bomb attacks on 19th May in the year 2000 in Vavuniya and Mundiruppu areas. The terrorists took away the lives of two war heroes in an attack in the Kiri-ibbanwewa area in Welioya on 19th May 2008.

Terrorism which plagued the country in this manner was totally uprooted on 18th May 2009. By then these ruthless terrorists had taken away a total of 47 lives on 19 May throughout the dark era. It included 10 civilians. The other 37 were brave soldiers.

The members of the Security Forces who advanced in the humanitarian operation due to the unwavering leadership of President Rajapaksa, who is also the Commander in Chief and the appropriate guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, killed the murderous tiger leader at the Nanthikadal Lagoon and ended the fear psychosis era. If not the country would have become a land of the dead.

The country is now enjoying unbridled freedom due to the dedication of the President, the Defence Secretary and the Security Forces. But it is sad to note that certain local as well as foreign forces are determined to destroy this peace. They are making false and unfounded allegations on these war heroes.

It is the courage and bravery displayed by the war heroes who made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the country that are being reminisced in this features. It cannot be deleted by anyone. Whatever was said by anyone, the war heroes who protected the country are immortal. It should be mentioned that the memories of these war heroes of the era who gave up their lives on behalf of genuine freedom, will be continued to be refreshed in this feature also from tomorrow.
