Sri Lanka seeks Australian support for the initiatives taken against raising funds for terrorist activities. The Sri Lankan External Affairs Minister made this appeal from his Australian counterpart.

External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris and the Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop had a meeting at the Australian Parliamentary Complex yesterday. The Sri Lankan Minister elaborated that the Sri Lankan Government under the United Nations General Assembly Resolution took the initiative of listing 16 groups as terrorist outfits and 424 persons as terrorists. Pointing out that investigations had revealed that a considerable amount of funds was received for terrorist activities from foreign countries, Minister Prof. Peiris requested his Australian counterpart not to support any such activities within her country. Lauding the measures so far taken by Australia against the LTTE, the Sri Lankan Minister made further clarifications with respect to the measures adopted by the Sri Lankan Government to prevent illegal migration to Australia. Australia was also praised for rejecting the co-sponsorship of the Resolution against Sri Lanka at the Geneva Human Rights Council session.

It was revealed that the main meeting of the Indian Ocean Rim countries which is chaired by Australia is slated to be held in Colombo next month. Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop positively responded to a request made by Minister Prof. Peiris to provide technical support to make an outstanding centre of Marine Science on the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka.
